Background of the Study:
Social media has transformed political communication, providing new avenues for grassroots engagement and mobilization. In Uyo, platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp have become instrumental in disseminating political information and shaping public opinion (Okon, 2023). This digital revolution has altered traditional modes of political participation by enabling citizens to access real-time news, share opinions, and organize community actions (Etim, 2024). However, while social media offers enhanced engagement, challenges such as misinformation and echo chambers persist (Ike, 2025). Research indicates that these platforms can both empower and marginalize voices, depending on how they are used by political actors and citizens alike (Obi, 2023). Consequently, understanding the dual-edged nature of social media is crucial for evaluating its impact on democratic processes at the grassroots level. This study seeks to explore the extent to which social media facilitates political engagement in Uyo, examining its role in mobilizing voters, influencing political narratives, and potentially reshaping local political dynamics (Udo, 2024).

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the promise of enhanced political engagement through social media, challenges such as misinformation and polarization have surfaced in Uyo. The rapid spread of unverified information has led to confusion and disengagement among certain voter segments (Nwankwo, 2023). This study aims to investigate the balance between the positive and negative impacts of social media on political participation in the local context, identifying key factors that affect grassroots mobilization (Eze, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the role of social media in enhancing political engagement in Uyo.
  • To analyze the impact of misinformation on political participation.
  • To recommend strategies for maximizing positive engagement while mitigating adverse effects.

Research Questions:

  • How does social media influence political participation at the grassroots level in Uyo?
  • What is the impact of misinformation on political engagement in the region?
  • What strategies can optimize the benefits of social media for democratic participation?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Active social media usage positively correlates with increased political participation in Uyo.
  • H2: The spread of misinformation on social platforms negatively impacts political engagement.
  • H3: Educational interventions can mitigate the adverse effects of misinformation on political participation.

Significance of the Study:
This research highlights the transformative role of social media in shaping political engagement in Uyo. It underscores the need for regulatory frameworks to curb misinformation while enhancing democratic participation at the grassroots level (Okon, 2023; Obi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses exclusively on the influence of social media on political engagement in Uyo Local Government Area and does not encompass other communication channels or regions.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Social Media: Digital platforms that facilitate the sharing of information and interaction among users.
  • Political Engagement: Active participation in political processes, including voting and public debate.
  • Grassroots Level: The most basic level of political participation, often involving local communities and organizations.
